Skills you'll need
What to learn and practise before you go. Each resource is marked Official or Community-accepted and names its publisher. Difficulty and prep time are our estimate.
The haneto hop-dance: bouncing, running and jumping to the Nebuta bayashi drums while chanting 'Rassera'
Also useful:
- Wearing the full haneto costume correctly (hanagasa hat, tasuki sash, yukata, okoshi, tabi and zori)
- Parade etiquette and the official haneto rules
Difficulty and prep time are Curiosta editorial estimates for a first-timer, not organiser figures.
Refresher
- Anyone in the full formal haneto costume can join; there is no registration. Rent or buy a costume in Aomori, and book rentals early.
- Costume checklist from the official site: flower hat (hanagasa), bright sash (tasuki), shigoki waist sash with a small tin cup, white yukata hitched to the knee over a pink or blue okoshi, white tabi with zori tied on with a mameshibori cloth so they don't come off.
- Rental shops usually help you dress; the official 'how to wear' page and its video walk through each step.
- Gather at the haneto assembly point before your chosen float departs; joining midway can be refused when it's crowded.
- Dance with energy: hop and bounce to the drums, follow the leader's whistle and calls, and shout 'Rassera!' with the group.
- Follow the official rules: obey parade staff, don't move backwards against the parade, no unrelated whistles, no fireworks, firecrackers, big sake bottles or throwing cans, clear the road for emergency vehicles, and disperse after one full loop.
- Expect a long, hot, tiring night; pace yourself and drink water.
Practise before you go
- Watch the official Aomori Nebuta Festival YouTube channel to learn the rhythm and the hop.
- Practise a light skipping hop to drum music for 20–30 minutes to build stamina.
- Practise walking and hopping in zori with the cloth-tie trick before the night.
Safety notes
- Heat and exhaustion: hydrate and pace yourself.
- Tie zori on securely to avoid falls.
- No fireworks, firecrackers or glass bottles in the procession; make way for emergency vehicles.
