Skills you'll need

What to learn and practise before you go. Each resource is marked Official or Community-accepted and names its publisher. Difficulty and prep time are our estimate.

Core skill

Spectator safety at mascletàs, castillos and the cremà (pyrotechnics and crowds)

Also useful:

  • Reading a falla: ninots, satire and the Ninot Exhibition vote
  • Crowd etiquette in a city-wide festival
Difficulty our estimateBeginner
Prep time our estimate30–45 minutes reading

Difficulty and prep time are Curiosta editorial estimates for a first-timer, not organiser figures.

Refresher

  1. Fallas are giant satirical monuments made of ninots (figures) by local artists and neighbourhood committees, then burned on 19 March (the cremà). Visit the Ninot Exhibition and vote for the figure to be pardoned from the flames.
  2. Mascletàs (daytime firecracker barrages) are extremely loud: Valencia's fire service advises standing behind barriers, following staff and keeping your mouth slightly open to protect your ears. Ear protection is sensible.
  3. Arrive by public transport, avoid crowd crushes and choose spots with space; stand with the wind at your back to avoid falling debris.
  4. On mascletà days the area around Plaza del Ayuntamiento bans bikes, scooters, prams, wheeled suitcases, glass bottles and other throwable objects at set times.
  5. Don't climb benches or bus shelters; keep children by the hand; leave calmly without pushing.
  6. In an emergency, tell security staff or call 112 with your exact location.

Practise before you go

  • Read the city's pyrotechnics advice and the easy-read 7 tips before you travel.
  • Pack foam earplugs and practise the 'mouth slightly open' habit at a Diwali fireworks show.
  • Learn a few Valencian/Spanish words (falla, ninot, mascletà, cremà).

Safety notes

  • Ear protection at mascletàs; stay behind barriers.
  • No prams, bikes, scooters, wheeled cases or glass near Plaza del Ayuntamiento at mascletà times.
  • Emergency number 112.
