Rio Carnival - parade with a samba school
USE a fantasia (costume) made in the samba school's barracão and parade in a wing (ala).
Your way in
Buy a wing (ala) costume through a samba school's official channel; the costume is your place in the parade.
Parade in a samba-school costume
Buy a fantasia (wing costume) through a samba school's own official channel: schools sell costumes for their alas (wings), and the costume is your place in the Sambadrome parade. Mangueira, for example, sells through its official site and says it isn't responsible for costumes bought elsewhere.

Skills you'll need
What to learn and practise before you go. Each resource is marked Official or Community-accepted and names its publisher. Difficulty and prep time are our estimate.
Basic samba stepping and stamina to keep moving for the whole parade
Also useful:
- Wearing and carrying a full fantasia (costume) through a long Sambadrome parade
- Singing along to your school's samba-enredo and following your ala (wing) leaders
Difficulty and prep time are Curiosta editorial estimates for a first-timer, not organiser figures.
Refresher
- To parade, you buy a costume for an ala (wing) of a samba school; the costume is your entry. Schools publish costumes once the year's theme is out.
- Learn the samba-enredo (the school's theme song) for your year; singing along matters to the judges' impression of your wing.
- Practise a simple samba step you can keep up with: a light, bouncy three-step weight change on the balls of the feet. You don't need to be a dancer, but you must keep moving forward.
- Wear the costume exactly as issued, with no extra bags or visible personal items; follow your ala leader's instructions on timing and spacing.
- Arrive early at the concentration area, hydrate, and eat before; parades run late at night in heat and humidity.
- Behind-the-scenes tours at Cidade do Samba (promoted by Visit Brasil) let you see costume and float workshops and try a few steps.
Practise before you go
- Learn your school's samba-enredo lyrics from its official channels.
- Do 30–45 minutes of continuous light samba stepping to music several times a week before Carnival.
- Practise moving in a heavy or bulky costume, e.g. with a weighted backpack and headgear.
Safety notes
- Heat and dehydration: drink water before and after.
- Break in comfortable footwear that suits your costume.
- Keep valuables out of the parade; no bags allowed in wings.
