Refresher, practice and safety

Difficulty and prep time are our estimate.

Main skill

Designing to a rulebook: size, weight, power source and team size

Also useful:

  • Chassis, steering and brakes for gravity karts
  • Buoyancy and waterproof materials for water landings and crossings
  • Light, safe structures with no sharp edges
  • Team roles, scrutineering and showmanship
Difficulty our estimateSkilled team (bed race and Henley: Some practice)
Prep time our estimate4–12 weeks depending on the event

Difficulty and prep time are Curiosta editorial estimates for a first-timer, not organiser figures.

Refresher

  1. Get the current edition's rules before you sketch anything; limits change by city and year.
  2. Power: gravity or human muscle only. Batteries and stored energy are almost always banned for propulsion (allowed for lights or music at Kinetic).
  3. Karts: low stable chassis, robust wheels, brakes on at least two wheels, precise steering, quick driver exit, helmets.
  4. Water: use materials lighter than water that don't waterlog (closed-cell foam, wood, sealed cans); test flotation with the full crew load; flotation jackets.
  5. Can boats: seal cans, tape them into straight strings, bundle them with chicken wire, add a deck.
  6. Frames you carry (beds, BYO boats): light conduit or pipe, capped ends, no sharp edges.
  7. Plan for scrutineering, and rehearse your skit, because judges score creativity and showmanship too.

Practise before you go

  • Build a scale model to the rules.
  • Test brakes and steering on a gentle slope.
  • Pool-test flotation with full load; check everyone can swim the distance the rules demand.

Safety notes

  • Helmets for karts and launches; flotation jackets for water events.
  • Swim requirements: Flugtag (100 yd), bed race (all competitors).
  • No stored-energy propulsion; no projectiles or fireworks.
