Skills you'll need
What to learn and practise before you go. Each resource is marked Official or Community-accepted and names its publisher. Difficulty and prep time are our estimate.
Helping a hamlet build team: papier-mâché over a steel and wire frame
Also useful:
- Dahlia work: sorting and pinning thousands of flowers in the final weekend
- Fitting in with a volunteer build crew
Difficulty and prep time are Curiosta editorial estimates for a first-timer, not organiser figures.
Refresher
- Every hamlet builds its float in its own tent (19 tents across Zundert). Tents are freely open while builders work: weekday evenings from about 7 pm and Saturdays (in August also Sundays).
- The official FAQ says everyone is allowed to help; walk in, introduce yourself and ask the hamlet what needs doing.
- Floats are built as a steel frame, then shaped concrete-reinforcing wire, then about seven layers of papier-mâché; fine details use foam (tempex). Expect gluing, papering and cutting jobs.
- In the last weekend the hamlets fix the dahlias (grown in their own fields) to the float, which is where many extra hands are needed.
- Wear clothes you don't mind ruining, closed shoes, and gloves around wire and steel; follow the build leader's instructions on ladders and scaffolds.
Practise before you go
- Make a small papier-mâché shape over a wire mesh form at home.
- Practise pinning or gluing flower heads (marigolds work) in tight rows on foam.
- Learn a few Dutch phrases; most builders also speak English.
Safety notes
- Gloves around wire and steel; closed shoes.
- Follow the build leader on ladders and scaffolds.
