Sculpting sand, snow and clay
Compaction: packing sand or snow into a dense block; Subtractive carving top-down with hand tools; Additive clay modelling: armature, layers, joins, slow drying; Designing for the material's strength (no thin overhangs).

Compaction: packing sand or snow into a dense block
Also useful:
- Subtractive carving top-down with hand tools
- Additive clay modelling: armature, layers, joins, slow drying
- Designing for the material's strength (no thin overhangs)
Difficulty and prep time are Curiosta editorial estimates for a first-timer, not organiser figures.
Refresher
- Sand: mix plenty of water in, stack wet 'pancakes' or pack forms in layers; a wider base lets you build taller.
- Snow: start from a maquette, remove big masses from the top down, keep weight over a solid base; hand tools only at major contests.
- Carve from the top down so debris falls on unfinished areas; keep sand moist with a spray bottle.
- Clay: knead out air, build from the base up, score and slip joins, cover unused clay with a damp cloth, dry slowly in shade.
- Eco rules for idols: natural clay and non-toxic colours; no PoP, plastic or thermocol.
- Follow contest rules: e.g. SandFest allows water only (no glue or paint) and no power tools.
Practise before you go
- Beach or sand-pit packing practice.
- Carve soap or floral foam top-down.
- Model a small clay figure and let it dry slowly.
Safety notes
- Sun and heat on beaches; cold injury in snow.
- Fill holes after sand carving.
- Sharp carving tools: cut away from yourself.
