Prep time our estimate2–4 hours reading plus a home test-build

Difficulty and prep time are Curiosta editorial estimates for a first-timer, not organiser figures.

Refresher

  1. Plan Ahead and Prepare is the first Leave No Trace principle: build at home, pre-cut materials, and know every fastener you bring.
  2. Document structures to the organiser's height bands (AfrikaBurn) or engineering requirements (Burning Man); anchor for wind; light art at night.
  3. Fire: approvals first (FAST at Burning Man, registration at AfrikaBurn); no fires on bare ground; raised, contained burn barrels; extinguishers visible; burn perimeter of at least 3× height (AfrikaBurn).
  4. MOOP: no feathers, glitter or loose decor; tie down anything that can blow away; carry magnets, rakes and bags; sweep daily and on departure; get your site signed off.
  5. Spectators at pyrotechnics: stay behind barriers, protect your ears, follow staff (Valencia fire service).
  6. Pack it in, pack it out: everything leaves with you.

Practise before you go

  • Read the Burning Man Survival Guide and the AfrikaBurn MOOP policy.
  • Test-assemble your build at home; time set-up and teardown.
  • Do a MOOP sweep of a local park.

Safety notes

  • No fires on bare ground; extinguishers visible.
  • Anchor everything; light art at night.
  • Leave No Trace: pack everything out.
