Reading wind and choosing a flying spot
Also useful:
- Launching single-line kites (solo and with a helper)
- In-flight corrections: bridle, tail, line length
- Building a simple kite
- Field courtesy and line safety
Difficulty and prep time are Curiosta editorial estimates for a first-timer, not organiser figures.
Refresher
- Fly in steady, moderate wind in open space, away from trees, roads, power lines and airports.
- Back to the wind; hold the kite by the bridle, let line out and pull in as it points up so it climbs; a helper can launch from 50 ft downwind in light wind.
- Sinking tail-first means too little wind; diving or spinning means too much. Move the bridle tow point a little, or add tail for stability.
- Walk towards another flier to untangle; never yank.
- Gloves for pulling kites; never let line run through bare fingers. Plain cotton thread only at Uttarayan, never nylon or glass-coated manja.
- Never fly in storms or near power lines; leave a kite that's tangled in wires.
- Build: light but strong spars, a taut sail, a balanced bridle; start from a proven plan before inventing.
Practise before you go
- Fly a cheap kite on an open ground or beach; practise solo and assisted launches.
- Build a sled kite from a bin bag and two sticks.
- Practise untangling with a friend.
Safety notes
- Power lines: never fly near them; abandon a tangled kite.
- Line cuts and burns: gloves.
- No nylon or glass-coated manja.
- Sun protection; sunburn is the most common kite-field injury (AKA).
